Pregnant 25-year-old stoned to death May 27, 2014

This is what year? What planet? Wh25-year-old stoned to deathat offense? What method of punishment?

Are you friggin’ kidding me? Is this even possible? Stop. Where do I get off this insane ride!

The facts as I know them: A 25-year-old woman was stoned to death by her family in Lahore, Pakistan. The offense was marrying the man she loved. The crowd of onlookers stood by in broad daylight and did nothing. The slain woman’s name is Farzana Parveen. She married Mohammad Iqbal against her family’s wishes. The family calls this an “honor killing”. The father says, “I killed my daughter as she had insulted all of our family by marrying a man without our consent, and I have no regret over it.” Farzana was stoned to death outside of a courthouse.

I cannot say whether I am more offended/saddened by a senseless death, or by the fact that it is yet again, a woman who was stoned to death, or that a crowd stood by and did nothing, or that this happened on the steps of a courthouse. Why wasn’t the husband stoned to death as well? Why did the onlookers do nothing? Where were the police in the courthouse?

Can we assume since no one did anything, that they all silently agreed with the stoning, and therefore were complicit in the murder? This type of human conduct enrages me. It summons up my very core of disgust at human’s abhorrent capability of brutal behavior. My mouth is still open in disbelief, yet belief; sorrow for all those tortured; but never acceptance that things cannot change.

In a separate case, in Khartoum, Sudan, a Meriam Yehya Ibrahim has been sentenced to death by stoning, after refusing to renounce her Christian faith in favor of Islam. Meriam just gave birth to a baby girl, while in prison. Pity the life of yet another girl born into this part of the world, that treats females worse than cattle.

What year is this? What planet is this? I want off.
