Advance confidently in the direction of your dreams

Henry David Thoreau said, “If you advanAdvance confidentlyce confidently in the direction of your dreams, and endeavor to live the life which you have imagined, you will meet with success unexpected in common hours. You will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within you; or the old laws be expanded, and interpreted in your favor in a more liberal sense, and you will live with the license of a higher order of beings.”

Ever since I dumped my first marriage in search of the illusive “something better” it seems my life has been in a tail spin. That was 28 years ago.

That tail spin, it turns out, is life. It is as I have chosen, yet sometimes I know not why. Why did I choose the succession of choices that I made, to in turn, be typing on this computer, on this desk, on this snowy day in February, 2014. I chose to be a mother, bear children, and now to be childless. I chose to be in a relationship that is yet another in a long string of cold, unfulfilling, talk sometimes, sorts of thing. In the last few years, I have started Writing and Mediation careers, to discover that Marketing just wasn’t a college class for salesmen, it is the very stuff that life is made of.

I have advanced confidently in the direction of my dreams. I have taken so many confident wrong turns that I had to have missed some right turns along the way. And in these wrong turns, I have passed through invisible boundaries. I have experienced more in life than I probably should have. I have arrived at some clarity. With real pain and loss comes the appreciation of being free of that pain and loss.

But there is a downside to crossing boundaries and seeing those old laws expand, and interpreted in a new way. We live in a land where everyone’s time, space, and laws are not expanding at the same rate of speed. Try conversing with a nursing mother of three toddlers about a serious subject involving kinetics, and you most likely will be met with the blind stare of incomprehension, and see first-hand your differing travel speeds. The same can be said for discussing your newfound more liberalized sense, with someone who has had but a few life experiences, to fully experience time and space limitations.

So finally, if you have dared to advance confidently, have passed through invisible boundaries, and interpreted your newfound awareness so that you can live with the license of a higher order of beings: How does it feel? Was it worth the trip?
